The Critical Challenges We Now Face

Real Wages Fall while Costs Continue to Rise: According to The Economic Policy Institute, the real wages of America’s workers fell last year by 1%-2%. At the same time, costs continued to rise. Health care costs have nearly doubled. Food costs increased a whopping 4.9%. College costs have jumped by almost 40%. Exacerbated by a freefalling dollar, U.S. retail gas prices have surged to record levels. Housing costs have increased by 3.5% over last year, while home values have steadily decreased. Today’s average American income is actually $1,000 lower than it was in 2000. And, personal saving’s rates are the lowest since the Great Depression.
