Amend NAFTA
Originally it was touted as a means to give U.S. workers a unique opportunity to move from low paying import industry jobs to high paying export industry jobs. However, after fourteen years, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has not worked. Instead of moving U.S. workers into the promised high paying jobs, it has actually caused the loss of 1 million American jobs nationwide. According to the Economic Policy Institute, in Florida alone, NAFTA was directly responsible for the displacement of 39,987 of our state’s workers.
Anita de Palma will sponsor legislation requiring that the U.S. Government renegotiate and amend NAFTA. Despite NAFTA’s history of economic devastation for American workers, a Republican Congress recklessly passed a similar agreement, the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Anita de Palma has already successfully lobbied congress and was instrumental in impeding the implementation of CAFTA. As a Member of Congress, she will continue that fight to oppose CAFTA until all the problems with NAFTA are completely rectified and resolved.
This is A BRIGHTER WAY!”
The Critical Challenges We Now Face
NAFTA Has Been A Bad Deal for American Workers: Although between 1993-2004, exports to Mexico and Canada actually increased by $104 billion, during that same time their imports to the U.S. more than doubled. Since its inception, 1 million American workers were displaced as a result of NAFTA, with a majority of those lost jobs affecting America’s manufacturing sector.
